Claude Pro vs Max (5x and 20x): how much more usage?

Claude Max costs five or ten times Pro and gives five or twenty times Pro's usage per five-hour session. Whether that is worth it depends on one thing: which limit stops you today, the five-hour session or the week. Here are the three plans as Anthropic describes them, and how to find out which limit you actually hit before you upgrade.

Max 20x

What the three have in common, according to Anthropic:

What “5x” and “20x” multiply

Anthropic states the multiplier per session: “Max 5x includes five times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance”. The pages we read give no multiplier for the weekly limit. So Max mainly widens the five-hour window; the weekly limit still applies, across all models.

Two dated facts change the picture from one month to the next. On , Anthropic doubled Claude Code's five-hour rate limits for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans. And on , its help center said that on Max, Fable can use up to half of the weekly limit, while on Pro it is paid for with usage credits.

When Max is worth it

Measure before you upgrade

The answer is in your own figures. On claude.ai, Settings › Usage shows your session and weekly usage with their reset times; in Claude Code, /usage does — see how to check your Claude usage. Look at them over a working week, at the moment you get stopped.

Quotum keeps both windows in your Mac menu bar, one line each, with when each resets and how old the figure is, so that you see which one runs out first without opening a page — for every Claude account you use, Pro and Max side by side.

FAQ

What is the difference between Claude Pro and Claude Max?

The usage per five-hour session: Max 5x gives five times Pro's, Max 20x twenty times. Pro costs $20 a month, Max 5x $100 and Max 20x $200, as displayed on claude.com/pricing on October 2, 2026. Both include Claude Code and a weekly limit.

Is Claude Max worth it?

If the five-hour limit stops you several times a week while your weekly limit still has room, Max addresses exactly that. If the week runs out first, check your weekly figure before upgrading, since Anthropic does not publish a weekly multiplier.

Is there a limit to how much I can use Claude Pro?

Yes: a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, shared between claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop. Usage credits, billed at API rates, let you continue past them once turned on.

Does Max 20x have a weekly limit?

Yes. Anthropic says Max plans have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models and resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account.

Is Claude Code included in Pro?

Yes. Anthropic says Claude Code is included in all paid plans and shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan. The free plan does not include it.
