Codex resets

See your banked Codex resets — and use one when you hit zero

A banked reset puts your Codex five-hour and weekly windows back to full, once. It is worth most on the day the week runs out in the middle of a job, and worth nothing once it has expired unused. Here is how they work, how to use one by hand, and how Quotum shows them and spends one only when your quota is really exhausted.

Checked on , against OpenAI's help center and Codex documentation, listed under Sources. Quotum's behavior is described as of version 2026.10.2.

What a banked reset is

OpenAI defines it as “a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires”. It is not purchased credit, and it does not raise your plan's limit for good. Three points from OpenAI's article matter in practice:

Banked resets are given by OpenAI or earned through referrals. OpenAI granted them to eligible Plus, Pro and Business accounts as part of the GPT-6 Astra rollout, on September 3 and 4 for existing accounts. A global reset such as the one of September 7, 2026 is different: it applied immediately to everyone and never appeared as a banked reset. OpenAI's support does not grant manual or courtesy resets.

Using one by hand

  1. Open Settings › Usage in the ChatGPT desktop app, in the Codex CLI, or on the web.
  2. Select the usage summary that shows an available reset, such as “1 reset available” or “Full reset”.
  3. Review the expiration details, then confirm.

In the Codex CLI, /usage is also the command OpenAI documents for using a rate-limit reset. Whichever route you take, it covers the account you are signed in to.

How Quotum shows them, and when it spends one

The hard part is not pressing the button; it is pressing it at the right moment, on the right account, without spending a reset on an account that still had room. In Quotum's menu bar panel, a Codex account that has resets available shows them on the account, next to its windows and their reset times. Spending one, with “Spend a reset”, has two paths:

Both paths wait for the same conditions: a ChatGPT account, a reset left, an exhaustion the server has observed — never inferred from a percentage, never mistaken for an expired token —, a measurement at most ten minutes old, and a return time still ahead. It cannot be undone — a reset once spent is lost. It is the only thing Quotum ever writes to an account; everything else it does is read-only.

Download Quotum €4.99, once

Free trial for fourteen days, on the first two lines of the panel. Launch price: €4.99, then €9.99. Spending a reset uses your ChatGPT account's sign-in; the pricing page explains the risk of reading and acting on a provider's quota from a third-party app before any purchase.

FAQ

Is it possible to reset my Codex usage limit?

Yes, with a banked reset if your account has one. Open Settings › Usage in the ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI or the web, select the available reset and confirm. It refreshes your five-hour and weekly windows. OpenAI's support does not grant manual resets.

Did Codex reset today?

Your own windows reset at the times your usage page shows. A global reset decided by OpenAI applies to every account at once; Quotum shows it as a window that has gone back down at the next measurement.

Do banked Codex resets expire?

Yes. The expiration is shown in your account and varies by offer, plan, workspace and region; an expired reset cannot be restored. The ones we measured in September 2026 expired thirty days after they were granted.

Is a reset wasted if I use it on an account that still has room?

OpenAI says a reset is consumed only when it refreshes at least one eligible window. Quotum goes further and offers to spend one only once the server has observed the quota exhausted.

Can Quotum spend a reset without asking me?

Only if you turn that setting on. It is off by default, it asks for a measurement at most ten minutes old and an exhaustion observed by the server, and every reset it spends is announced by a notification.
