How to check your Codex usage
Open the Codex usage dashboard at chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage, or
Settings › Usage in the ChatGPT desktop app, to see which Codex limit you are
using and when it resets. In the Codex CLI, type /status during a session, or
/usage for your account's usage. Each shows the account you are signed in to.
Codex rarely stops at a convenient moment. When the weekly window runs out on a Wednesday, the work waits until the reset, or moves to another account. Knowing which account still has room, and until when, is what lets you plan the next long task. Here is where OpenAI shows your Codex usage, what its limits are made of, and how to follow several ChatGPT accounts at once.
Checked on , against OpenAI's Codex documentation and help center, listed under Sources. OpenAI adjusts Codex limits and plans often: the pages linked below are the reference.
The Codex usage dashboard
The dashboard at chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage shows your Codex limits for the
ChatGPT account you are signed in to. OpenAI's help center gives the same route when you are
close to a limit: open Settings or your usage dashboard, then check which allowance is
exhausted, your credit balance, and any reset time shown.
In the Codex CLI: /status and /usage
/statusdisplays the session configuration and token usage. It is the command OpenAI points to “in an active Codex CLI session”./usageshows your account's token usage, with/usage daily,/usage weeklyand/usage cumulative, and is also where you use a rate-limit reset.
In the ChatGPT desktop app
Codex runs inside the ChatGPT desktop app, in its Codex mode. Settings › Usage shows your usage there, and it is one of the three places, with the CLI and the web, where an available banked reset can be used.
What the Codex limits are made of
Codex is included in the ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans. OpenAI's pricing page describes its limits this way:
- On Plus and Business Standard, a number of local messages per five-hour window, given as a range per model.
- On Pro, “Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit”.
- Weekly limits “may also apply”; OpenAI publishes no figure for them, and none for Free and Go.
What we measured agrees: on the Codex plans we read in September 2026, only the seven-day window was published, with no five-hour window. So check which window you are in before you conclude that you have plenty left: a full five-hour window does not help when the week is used up. When you hit the limit: banked resets
A banked reset is, in OpenAI's words, “a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires”. Using one refreshes your five-hour and weekly windows. OpenAI's support does not grant manual resets. How to see how many you have, and spend one at the right moment: Codex resets.
Several ChatGPT accounts at once
The dashboard, the CLI and the app each show the account you are signed in to. With a work and a personal ChatGPT account, comparing them means signing out of one to look at the other.
Quotum puts them in your Mac menu bar: for each Codex account, the seven-day window, the five-hour window when the plan publishes one, the time each resets, the resets available, and how long ago the figure was measured. The account the Codex CLI is signed in to is measured on request; other Codex accounts show a figure whenever one is available, with its age. Details: the Codex usage tracker.
The trial is free, lasts fourteen days and covers the first two lines of the panel. Launch price: €4.99, then €9.99. Reading a provider's quota from a third-party app is not something the provider provides for: the pricing page explains the risk before any purchase.

FAQ
Where can I see my Codex usage?
On the Codex usage dashboard, chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage, in Settings › Usage of the ChatGPT desktop app, or with /status and /usage in the Codex CLI. Each shows the account you are signed in to.
Does Codex have a 5-hour limit?
It depends on the plan. OpenAI describes a five-hour window on Plus and Business Standard, and says that Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Weekly limits may also apply. On the plans we measured in September 2026, only the seven-day window was published.
Does Codex usage reset every day?
No daily reset is published. Codex limits are counted in a five-hour window on some plans and a weekly window, and each resets at the time your dashboard shows.
Can I reset my Codex usage limit?
Only with a banked reset, if your account has one: it refreshes your five-hour and weekly windows. OpenAI's support says it does not provide manual or courtesy resets.
Can I see several Codex accounts at once?
Not in OpenAI's own tools, which show the signed-in account. Quotum, a macOS menu bar app, shows the Codex windows of several ChatGPT accounts side by side, with the resets available and the age of each figure.
